Endurance racing is like an epic battle. It’s a remorseless crusade of man and metal. A gruelling challenge, pushing all involved to the absolute limit. Total commitment is the only option available… This film pays homage to past heroes whose exploits have forged the legend of the Le Mans 24 Hours. Taking inspiration from Shakespeare’s timeless play Henry V, it immortalises these skirmishes, forays, attacks, and defences, the legends of which still echo around the Circuit de Sarthe to this very day.
Event films always look the same. There’s an opening general view, a quick paced edit of good weather, smiling people and an arty shot of the event’s signage – then the music kicks in and there’s a montage of whatever goes on during the day.
If you’re especially unlucky you might get a documentary-style talking head explaining what’s going on and then some vox-pops of delighted attendees.
So, for this project celebrating the Le Mans Classic, MilleDollars suggested raising the bar.
Instead of simply following the same old formula, we decided to create something epic and cinematic – something that would talk to passionate car fans and get them revved-up for the show.
We approached things like we were filming a big screen drama, with each shot perfectly considered and set-up rather than captured opportunistically.
Scheduling was key for this shoot, as we had to manage our production during the midst of the event being set-up around us.
That meant a day/night schedule and long hours, but ultimately it more than paid off.
